After thinking more about free albums and the new challenges facing musicians today, a few probably unoriginal thoughts keep coming up:
- Going forward without (supposed) label support, musicians will need a much stronger base of marketing knowledge to succeed
- There is probably an opportunity for entrepreneurs to fill this need for said musicians
- If I were looking to promote my music online, I would hire someone like John who knows the industry from both artist and audience perspective.
- The number of albums you need to sell to “succeed” is much smaller now because a larger piece of the pie is yours
I don’t think the odds of succeeding have actually changed; it was just as minute when they were vying with 100′s of other bands for label attention and resources.
Except now, success more fully lies in the musicians’ hands, and I view that as a good thing.
